Carving Workshop with Monica Setziol-Phillips

 

This workshop is designed to give students the opportunity to experiment and expand creative horizons based on explorations in possibilities in wood carving. Emphasis is on discovery.

Students will work with a panel of Alder approximately 10" x 16" pre-scored to form a grid from which to explore alternative inner patterns of their choosing.

INSTRUCTOR/ARTIST BIO: Monica Setziol-Phillips learned to carve in her father Leroy Setziol’s shop. She has been seriously carving since 1986. She has exhibited her work in galleries around the state and her work is in private collections around the country. Public Art commissions include Sunriver Lodge, McMinnville Civic Hall, and Salishan Lodge and Spa. She has taught carving at Sitka Center for Art and Ecology fo11 years.  Monica lives in Sheridan OR with her husband; retired actor, JP Phillips.

COST - $325 including wood and food ($355 for non-members of OCG or GOOW).

DATES - Saturday, Sunday March 11-12, 2023

TIMES - 10:00 to 4:00 pm each day

BRING TO CLASS - A ruler, sharpie, mallet (if you have one), and three gouges: (approximate dimensions)

  • #6 by 1/2” or 3/8”
  • #3 by 1” minimum
  • #3 by 1/2”

     *Additional tools will be provided, and a few of the above might be available to borrow from the club's tool library.

SAFETY - You will be required to read the Carving Safety Manual, and sign a liability waiver. 

CANCELLATION POLICY - If you cancel within three weeks, you will get a full refund.  If you cancel within two weeks, you will be refunded half, after that, there is no refund.  However, if at any time we are able to find a replacement, you will get a full refund.   We know life happens and things come up.  Please cancel as early as possible so others can take your slot.

LOCATION - Kelley Stadelman's carving studio in North Plains, about five minutes NW of the town center or a 40 minute drive west of downtown Portland.  The address will be sent a few days before the class.  This is a spacious studio that is a joy to work in.
