Masamichi Nitani ("Masa") is a retired woodworker and carver with specialized skills and approaches he learned in Sapporo, Japan as an apprentice.  He has lived in Portland since 1987, and has had a varied career.  He taught several classes for us before the pandemic, and we are planning to do more.

Masa's heritage is from the Ainu indigenous population of Hokkaido, Japan's northernmost island.

He will demonstrate the techniques he uses and show examples and photos of his work.  Likely topics will include:

- tools set, customized handles, and usage
- sharpening methods
- his Japanese workbench and usage
- texturing
- finishing
- design and reading the wood
- carving the Ainu bear

Please register to get the Zoom link and so we can notify you of any changes.
