Flat Plane Carving with Terry Burnside

Flat-plane carving is a Scandinavian folk art that has gained popularity in the US.  using a single knife. The completed piece is typically left with carve marks with no sanding. The name comes from the intentional appearance of the carving, which is made up of many flat surfaces, rather than rounded ones.

The picture above is the project we'll carve out of Basswood. Even though the figures are not typically sanded they are often painted, which we will discuss but not do in the class.

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION

This is a class to learn the basics of Flat-Plane carving using a single knife,  The subject will be a human figure shown above. The class will be two four hour sessions, in person, a week apart.

TOOLS  - You should plan on providing your own knife, but loaners are likely available. In addition to a knife you will need a glove, thumb guard, and a strop. The traditional Flat-Plane knife is called a Sloyd knife and on Amazon you usually find them as a Morakniv 120 (shorter blade) or Morakniv 106 (longer blade).  In any case you need a fixed blade knife with a straight or a slightly curved edge, ranging for 2.5 to 4 inches in length. A sharp rough out knife works very well for this style.

COST - $25.  This is a pilot class and fees are half the expected price in the future.  Includes wood.  You should try to provide your own knife, glove, and thumb guard, but some loaners are avaialble.

WOOD - a band sawn roughout blank will be provided.
