Help Needed

We want to make 100 Comfort Birds for the Gathering of the Guilds.  They are made out of a variety of woods and will generally be finished by two members using the Beall waxing and polishing system.

They are usually made with a power carving tools like a Dremel with coarse and fine bits, along with a power sanding wheel.  Soft woods can be carved by hand with a knife, a few gouges, and a safety glove.  They can also be made in combination - roughed out with power by one person and finished carved by a second.

The general steps are:

- cut  2" x 2" x 5" blocks

- use a template to mark the top and side profiles

- use a band saw to cut the blank

- remove the edges and rough out the surfaces

- complete the final carving

- sand by power or hand

- finish

- put in a nice package and give to a delighted user

There are a variety of ways to help.  Simplest is if you learn to make them start to finish and simply deliver final products.  If you can band saw out the blanks but not carve, there is plenty for you to do.  If you have a Dremel (or a Foredom or similar) but don't know how to use them, we'll teach you. When you register, you can focus on one area, say you can help in more than one way, or simply say you aren't sure but want to help.

We'll provide the wood, and we may have all the blocks prepared and many of the patterns already marked.

DATES/TIMES - We need them completed by April 30th

COST - varies, depending on your the tools you have.  If you have a Dremel, you have to spend about $30 for two Kutzall burrs and some sanding wheels.  You might be able to borrow someone else's Dremel or other rotary tool.  Let's talk!
